University Human Resources earned their Platinum certification by powering down computers when not in use, setting all printers to default double-sided, and tracking paper use with a goal for reduction. Additionally, the department's Green Team worked to remove 73 space heaters from the work space, avoiding an estimated 17,600 kWh electricity and more than $1,400 in energy costs a month.
The Spectrum Center became Platinum certified by setting equipment to energy saving settings, powering down at the end of the day, and installing motion-sensing power-strips. Recycling areas were expanded and signage improved. Printers now default to double-sided, many steps are taken to reduce paper use, and paper use/purchases are tracked with a goal of reduction. Additionally, many steps have been taken to incorporate communication about sustainability into regular office-business.
UMHS Michigan Health Corporation earned their Platinum certification by changing the energy settings on equipment and powering off equipment at night. They also removed disposable items from the kitchen and rely on reusable plates and utensils. The staff has also taken steps to eliminate unnecessary printing by utilizing the user box on their copier.
LSA Chemistry earned their Platinum certificate through expanding recycling areas, displaying energy saving and waste reduction information, and incorporating sustainability education into daily practices and new staff orientation. The office also set all printers to default to duplex printing, cancelled unused catalogs and junk mail, removed unneeded desktop printers and now tracks paper purchases with a goal of further reducing paper use.
MSA Project Management became Platinum certified by verifying computers were set to energy saving settings and equipment was powered down at night. Paper was switched to that with recycled content, and two desktop printers were removed. Efforts to increase sustainability awareness included staff completing the Planet Blue Ambassador online training tool, expanding recycling signage, and including sustainability in new-employee orientation. Finally, recycling areas were expanded and staff discontinued their ordering and use of disposable kitchenware!
University Audits earned a Platinum certificate by building upon already instilled sustainable workplace habits. Recycling areas have been expanded, paper purchases are now being tracked with the goal of further reducing paper use, and all applicable equipment are being fully powered down at the end of the work day. Additionally, communications and resources about sustainability have been integrated into day-to-day activities and into new staff orientation.
Finance - Sponsored Programs became Platinum certified by increasing communications around sustainability, forming a Green Team, making a formal commitment to reduce unnecessary car travel, and completing the Planet Blue Ambassador online training. Additionally, recycling areas were expanded, recycled content of paper was increased and the purchase of disposable kitchen items was discontinued. Finally, the office is working with their Regional Energy Manager to re-position thermostats to more efficiently heat and cool the space.
Student Academic Affairs earned a Platinum Certification by committing to purchase only recycled-content paper, set all machines to energy and paper-saving settings, participating in the PrintSmart program, and tracking paper ordering with a goal of reducing use even further. Additionally, the office formed a Green Team to increase communications around sustainable behaviors, and even transition the office to a waste-free kitchen area.
The Medical School Facilities office earned their Platinum Certification by installing motion sensing power strips at all work stations, powering off computers at the end of the day, and installing power strips as central turn off points for peripheral and kitchen equipment including microwaves. All computers are set to print duplex as the default, and in an effort to further reduce paper waste, the office is monitoring paper purchases and setting a goal for reduction.
The U-M Golf Course earned Platinum by reducing energy consumption by enabling sleep mode on all equipment and shutting off all computers and peripheral devices at the end of the work day. Commitments to waste reduction include setting printers to duplex printing, cancelling unneeded catalog and periodical subscriptions, tracking paper use and setting a goal for reduction, and phasing out the provision of disposable kitchen items for staff.
