Rec Sports / Club Sports earned their Gold certificate by completing tasks including enabling sleep mode on all equipment and powering down computers at the end of the work day, expanding recycling areas and improving signage, and eliminating the use of disposable kitchenware. The team also completed Planet Blue Ambassador training and incorporated ongoing communication about sustainability into the workplace as well as into staff orientation.
Integrative Systems and Design became a Gold certified sustainable workplace by powering down equipment when not in use, expanding recycling areas, and increasing communications around sustainable practices including setting a policy to avoid unnecessary car travel. To further reduce waste, the group switched to a higher level of recycled content paper, removed unnecessary printers and other equipment, discontinued the use of disposable kitchen items for staff, and have started tracking paper purchases with a goal of reducing use even further.
UMHS Office of Clinical Safety attained the gold level as a Certified Sustainable Workplace. The office started purchasing recycled content paper and set their printers to default to duplex printing. Sustainability was integrated into new employee orientation and became part of the conversation during staff update meetings.
The Michigan Sea Grant received a Gold certificate for building on their existing commitment to sustainability by setting all printers print double-sided, and by monitoring paper use and setting a goal for reducing it by 20%.
The Erb Institute earned their Gold Certificate through shutting down equipment at night, removing unnecessary printers and increasing their recycled content of copy and printing paper to at least 50%. The Institute has also committed to encouraging sustainable behavior by participating in the Planet Blue Ambassador online training, displaying information about recycling and other best practices, and phasing out of disposable cups in the common kitchen area.
The Philosophy Department, having already implemented many sustainability measures including enabling energy saving settings on office equipment, avoiding personal printers and unnecessary paper use, and having well established recycling practices, earned Gold certification by expanding signage and sustainability awareness across the department.
HITO was able to reach gold certification by using power strips as central turnoff points for equipment and shutting everything off before leaving work, creating a comprehensive recycling collection area, tracking paper use and setting a goal for reduction, and integrating sustainability material into regular staff meetings and new employee orientations. HITO is also investigating the use of motion-sensing power strips and a shared staff-bike for travel around campus.
UMHS Safety Management Services reached Gold certification by building on their already sustainable energy saving behaviors and taking additional steps to reduce waste. Some key efforts include reducing paper use, replacing disposable kitchen items with reusable items, adopting green purchasing practices, and promoting alternative transportation options to their off-campus staff.
The office is at the Silver level in the Sustainable Workplace Program. The team installed a white board to decrease paper communications and uses one copier for the group for printing needs. The office rarely uses the office light as the natural light is sufficient on most days.
Fields Café recently opened in Palmer Commons and they are highlighting the majority of their menu as local products. In addition composting is the norm for post-consumer waste. All of the staff are Planet Blue ambassadors and this team is working hard to increase their certification level from silver to platinum!
