The MUJO cafe has earned Platinum sustainable workplace status. The cafe encourages the purchase of a reusable water bottle for the same price as a single use water bottle. They are composting the coffee grounds and over half the staff are now planet blue ambassadors. Equipment is turned off when not in use. Staff sustainability ideas are encouraged and are frequently turned into action. Recently they created a sign to remind staff to only run the dishwasher when it is full.
The Michigan Union U-go's has been upgraded from a Gold to Platinum certified sustainable workplace. They are now composting their coffee grounds and provide a container for customers to compost wood stir sticks and napkins. UGo's supports local food by highlighting local products on their shelves, supporting local farmers by selling produce in their stores during the growing season and supporting student food programs by offering UMSFP t-shirts for sale in their stores. You can refill your reusable water bottle for free at their refill station.
The Twigs Dining Service might be the smallest of the Michigan Dining Service areas but the staff here are fully dedicated to sustainability. 100% of the staff have become Certified Planet Blue Ambassadors. Pre and post consumer composting is being done with a high degree of attention paid to prevent contamination. The staff exhibit innovation by using non-toxic lemon juice to clean the grills and reuse the backs of menus to reduce paper usage. This group is a Platinum Certified Sustainable Workplace.
The South Quad Dining location is the largest and newest on campus. Sustainability was considered in the design of the hall. Repurposed bowling lanes and chairs from coke bottles are just a couple of the features you will find. Over 90% of the staff have become Certified Planet Blue Ambassadors. The Dining team are composting kitchen scraps as well as left over food. Creative ways are being used to reduce paper usage. (check out the omelette station). This group is Certified as a Platinum Sustainable Workplace.
The Hill Dining staff serve up great food and also care about UM sustainability. Over 90% of the staff have become Certified Planet Blue Ambassadors. They have established a paper reduction goal and have started conducting paperless weekly meetings. The group recently upgraded from Gold to Platinum and became the third (and largest) Dining Hall to receive Platinum distinction.
The Michigan Union kitchen is certified as a Platinum Sustainable Workplace. The majority of staff are Planet Blue Ambassadors, the light switches all have reminders to turn off the lights, and sustainability is on the agenda at staff meetings. The department is composting pre-consumer food scraps and uses reusable kitchen items for staff use.
Fireside Cafe opened in their newly remodeled space in the fall of 2014. The group reduced paper usage creating the welcome letter as a pdf, using a web form for scheduling and initiating electronic signage for the menus. The cafe does pre-consumer composting and procures local food whenever possible. Their Green team works to help other recommendations for sustainability.
Campus Information Center obtained Platinum level certification. CIC has over 30 student staff that provide assistance to visitors of the Union, League and Pierpont locations. Nearly all of the staff and student staff completed that Planet Blue Ambassador training. The group eliminated the water jug dispenser if favor of using the refill stations conveniently located in each of these University Union locations.
University Housing Information Office has attained Sustainable Workplace Certification - Platinum level. The group reached this goal by forming a Green team, having a presentation about Sustainability at a recent staff meeting, reducing paper usage by using technology that stores documents electronically. At least half of the staff is now a Planet Blue Ambassador. The group has also phased out the use of individually bottled water and 5 gallon jugs.
Bursley Dining obtained Platinum level in the Sustainable Workplace program. The staff demonstrated that they seek out ways to reduce waste. Sustainability is an agenda item every month at staff meetings. The staff routinely take bags that can't be recycled for use at home and reuse the backs of papers for notepads. Management has created a bulletin board for sustainability, implemented pre-consumer composting and will be moving forward with post consumer composting the spring of 2015.
