Bursley Dining obtained Platinum level in the Sustainable Workplace program. The staff demonstrated that they seek out ways to reduce waste. Sustainability is an agenda item every month at staff meetings. The staff routinely take bags that can't be recycled for use at home and reuse the backs of papers for notepads. Management has created a bulletin board for sustainability, implemented pre-consumer composting and will be moving forward with post consumer composting the spring of 2015.
University Activities Center has earned Platinum level Sustainable Workplace Certification. The department is located in the Michigan Union and uses natural daylight in rooms as much as possible. They routinely disconnect equipment that is not in use, choose double sided printing and eliminated the plastic water jugs in favor of using the refill station located on their floor. The department supports student group events and historically have produced a lot of paper flyers. They use digital signage in locations that support digital and continues to brainstorm ways to reduce their paper usage.
The Facilities Management Office within the College of Engineering has advanced from a bronze level to Platinum as a Sustainable Workplace. The team supports new and existing buildings, investing in energy saving features such as lighting signage and motion detection. Over 50% of the staff are Planet Blue Ambassadors and they take that role very seriously. They noted a vendor that was throwing their recyclable waste in the trash and notified the appropriate department to correct the behavior.
LSA Instructional Support Services have earned Platinum designation. They do not have access to a kitchen but were still able to reduce disposables. The staff were given reusable mugs with the department logo. The department saved approximately 92 pounds of waste per year and were able to see a payback in 4-5 months. The group provides support to many classrooms on campus and has pledged to continue to look for ways to improve sustainability on campus.
The University Unions maintenance office achieved Platinum status by purchasing 30% recycled content paper. All ten maintenance crew attended the DSL presentation to share an overview of sustainable efforts on campus and how their staff can help. All members of this crew are part of a Green Team to help implement sustainability recommendations. They have also eliminated disposable kitchen items and are supplying the crew with washable reusable cups to use instead of disposable.
The Center for Campus Involvement became certified as a Platinum Sustainable Workplace by increasing waste reduction and energy saving behaviors, and engaging staff in sustainability training and regular communications about sustainable best practices. Some of the best practices include expanding recycling areas, setting all equipment to sleep mode and powering down at the end of the day, and eliminating unnecessary equipment.
The Financial Operations - Payroll - 6th Floor WOTO offices earned Platinum certification by increasing awareness and education around sustainability, completing the Planet Blue Ambassador online training program, and having multiple sustainability presentations for staff. Additionally, computers are fully powered down at the end of the work day, and many staff installed motion sensing power strips to further reduce energy waste. Paper orders and usage are tracked with a goal of further reduction, and both offices have eliminated the use of disposable cups, dishware and silverware for staff!
The UMHS Division of Public Safety and Security - Guest Services became certified at the Platinum level by building on many already established waste reduction and energy efficiency best practices. New efforts included increasing the recycled content of paper, expanding educational efforts across the unit around sustainability, and incorporating sustainability into new staff orientation and training. Additionally, the team earned bonus points for the recycled content of their uniforms!
The Financial Operations, 6th Floor WOTO offices earned Platinum certification by increasing awareness and education around sustainability, completing the Planet Blue Ambassador online training program, and having multiple sustainability presentations for staff. The LSA Dean's Office reached Platinum certification through enabling energy savings on all equipment, shutting equipment off at night, posting reminders to turn off lights and reduce water use, and incorporating sustainability educational material into staff orientation and regular communications.
