RecycleMania 2018!

This winter term marks the University of Michigan’s thirteenth year participating in RecycleMania! RecycleMania is an eight week competition among colleges and universities across the U.S. to see which school can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate over the course of the competition. This year’s competition will run from February 4 to March 31. We will be participating in the Per Capita Classic (lbs. recycling per capita), Waste Minimization (lbs. total waste per capita), Total Recycling (total recycling weight), and Diversion Champion (diversion rate).

RecycleMania 2018: Battle of the Buildings!

This winter semester, the UM Recycling Program will be hosting the Twelfth Annual RecycleMania Battle of the Buildings Competition, an intra-campus waste reduction and recycling competition! This competition will also run from February 4 – March 31. Battle of the Buildings will pit participating buildings on the U-M Ann Arbor Campus against one another. We will track participating buildings' recycling and trash each week. There will be three competition categories: Recycling Rate, Most Improved Recycling Rate, and Waste Reduction.

The Recycling Rate Competition measures the percentage of total waste that is recycled.

The Most Improved Recycling Rate Competition compares the 2018 recycling rate over the course of the eight weeks to the 2017 recycling rate over the same time period.

The Waste Reduction Competition compares the total waste (recycling and trash) in 2018 to the total waste produced in 2017.

Each week of RecycleMania will have a different theme, challenging participants to further reduce their waste and recycle the rest!

Competition Rules

Trash, single stream recycling, hardcover books and shredded paper may be included in the competition. To be included, hard cover book and shredding data must be self-reported, included dated documentation and be submitted no later than one week after the end of the competition.
