There’s nothing more relaxing than curling up with a hot cup of tea after a stressful day of classes. That’s why, when I found out that Michigan Dining is now serving Light of Day Organics teas at their cafes, I got really excited. Light of Day Organics is certified Organic and Demeter Biodynamic; in fact, they are the only commercial tea grower in North America with both of these certifications. Even better than the company being based in North America, is the fact that they are based locally, in Traverse City, Michigan. That means that we have the ability to purchase responsibly and locally grown tea products right here on campus.

After learning about their environmental commitment and locally based company, I wanted to know how their teas tasted so I went to a tea sampling sponsored by the Center for Campus Involvement. The teas highlighted were the black, green, rooibos, almond oolong, and chai. My favorites were definitely the almond oolong, chai, and rooibos.

The almond oolong was a milder tea, with a sweet almond taste that wasn’t too overpowering. The rooibos was a great herbal tea with an aroma, and faint taste, of flowers. The chai had a typical bold flavor, but with more cinnamon than other varieties I’ve had. The almond oolong seemed perfect for fall, and I can see myself grabbing a cup of the chai as a pick-me-up during those cold days during winter semester. After trying all of the offered varieties, I can say that if you buy any Light of Day product, you’ll not only be supporting an eco-conscious company, but you’ll also be treating yourself to a comforting cup of tea that’s perfect for any time of the day.
