The Graham Institute is seeking a part-time Managing Editor for the new Graham Sustainability Institute Journal. Please read below for information about the position and how to apply.
JOB SUMMARY: The managing editor is responsible for managing the journal’s scope, schedule, budget, and for coordinating among section editors. Along with the journal’s executive board, the managing editor will identify and communicate with peer reviewers. The managing editor will also be responsible for communications with the University of Michigan Scholarly Publishing Office, copy editing and printing coordination. The publication of the first issue promises to be exciting, with opportunities to shape the future of the journal.
Expected time commitment is between six and ten hours per week compensated between $15 and $18 per hour depending on experience. The managing editor should have prior experience with publications, be detail oriented, and have excellent management skills.
JOURNAL SUMMARY: The Graham Sustainability Institute Journal will publish timely, innovative, stimulating, and informative articles in three areas: (1) sustainable freshwater systems, (2) livable communities, and (3) responses to climate variability and change. The journal’s sections include: peer-reviewed research articles, research/project notes, and book reviews. Submissions will be accepted from students and faculty, with a focus on presenting work done at the University of Michigan. The periodical will be designed to appeal to readers from a broad range of specialties and backgrounds, and papers will be edited to be jargon free and comprehensible even to those reading outside their own area of expertise. In order to facilitate interdisciplinary understanding each article will be peer reviewed by a social scientist, a physical scientist, and a public policy expert. The journal will be open access and peer review will occur in a double blind fashion, as facilitated by the University of Michigan’s Scholarly Publishing Office. The journal executive board will consist of editors for each section and guest editors will be invited as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates should have significant writing and/or editing experience. Prior experience with managing and publishing is highly valued. Interest and experience in sustainability research will be considered, but is not necessary.
TERMS: The term of appointment will be one journal issue (first issue period is Winter 2012 through Fall 2012, including Spring/Summer terms), with the possibility of renewal for up to three issues.
