What came into University housing with students goes out during Move Out 2015!
As students pack up, there’s a concerted effort to repurpose all of the items left behind. University Housing and U-M Waste Management Services (WMS) will be collaborating once again to provide donation and recycling opportunities to students.
Designated donation boxes have been placed in common areas throughout all 18 residence halls, as a way to collect clothing, shoes, bedding, non-perishable food, toiletries, small appliances and household items. Bulky items that can’t fit into a box or bag -- such as lamps, drawers and carpets -- can be left at the designated “Take it or Leave It” areas, usually located in parking areas or near the dumpsters.
All donations will be distributed to local service organizations. This year’s recipients are Food Gatherers, St. Vincent de Paul, the Ann Arbor PTO Thrift Shop, the Salvation Army, Purple Heart and Easter Seals.
Recycling bins also are scattered throughout the residence halls for students to deposit unwanted items, including course packs, electronics, paper, plastics and perishables.
Last year’s Move Out drive was declared a success with more than 10 tons of items collected for donations. This year, the staff hopes to meet or exceed donation and recycling goals.
