The second MFarmers' Market, presented by the Health Issues Commission of the Michigan Student Assembly in collaboration with University Unions, took place on the Michigan Union Patio on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (following the first-ever MFarmer's Market held on September 15, 2011). Each market day offers fresh produce from local farms, as well as cooking demonstrations, free samples, giveaways, games, and information about healthy and sustainable living.
"We are very excited to be able to provide healthy eating options and healthy cooking tips to students at the University of Michigan," said Monica Sangal, chair of the Health Issues Commission. "We hope that this event will make it easier for students to make healthy eating decisions."
The Michigan Student Assembly is working with many University partners to host this event. In addition to University Unions, additional support is provided by MHealthy, University Housing, University Unions Arts and Programs, University Health Services, the Graham Sustainability Institute, University Catering, the Student Sustainability Initiative, and UU food retail venues.
"I am delighted to be involved in bringing the Farmers' Market event to campus," said Keith Soster, Food Service Director for University Unions. "As the focus for local purchasing becomes more important to the community, allowing our faculty, staff and students to see and learn about the many initiatives that are taking place on our campus is critical. The Farmers' Market is a fun and informative avenue to showcase our work with local suppliers, as well as our additional sustainable efforts."
