During the month of October the University of Michigan is participating in Food Day a nationwide celebration of healthy and sustainable food. Food Day seeks to bring together Americans from all walks of life—parents, teachers, and students; health professionals, community organizers, and local officials; chefs, school lunch providers, and eaters of all stripes—to push for healthy, affordable food produced in a sustainable, humane way.

The University of Michigan is hosting a number of events scheduled throughout the month of October in recognition of Food Day:

American Food Ways: The Jewish Contribution: September 4th - December 8th, 2013 Exhibit 8:30am to 7:00pm, Audubon Room & North Lobby Cases, Hatcher Graduate Library

Learn about Jewish contributions to American culinary history from 1660 to 2013.

Harvest Festival: Oct. 2nd, 4 - 8 p.m., Matthaei Botanical Gardens

Farm Fresh Wednesdays: Oct. 3rd-30th, Michigan Union U-go’s, Pierpont commons U-go’s

 

Every Wednesday through October, Michigan Union U-go’s and Pierpont Commons U-go’s will host a produce table right outside the store and will also feature some items within the store that are made from local produce.  For more information: Farm Fresh Wednesdays. 

 


The Global Health and Development Coalition Presents: Students taking Action:  Oct 6th, 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Michigan League Ballroom

 

Hosted by: Center for Campus Involvement

Come and learn about innovative ways to fight poverty and health inequities from a multidisciplinary approach. This free one-day conference features an activism workshop, career panel, innovation session, and many other speakers.


MFarmers’ Market: Oct. 10th, 11 a.m.-3 p.m., North Campus, Duderstadt Courtyard   

In partnership with Central Student Government, University Unions is hosting MFarmers' Markets in the fall. The markets are designed to provide an opportunity for students and the campus community to learn about the benefits of locally grown food, sustainable living and healthy eating.For more information:  MFarmers' Market 


Produce Days: Oct. 3rd, 10th, 16th and 31st from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Stop by NCRC Building 18, ground level next to the Flavors Café to purchase fresh, locally grown produce.

U-go’s: October 21 – 24

MHealthy items will be highlighted all day to encourage healthy choices!


Student Advocates for Nutrition:

October 21st, 10 a.m.-3:00 p.m. School of Public Health I lobby 

This student group will have a table to raise awareness about food security issues. They will provide low-cost, delicious, and nutritious recipe cards and samples, hand out their Food for Thought newsletter with a food security/eating health on a budget theme, and also collect money for Food Gatherers.


Farmworker Justice Panel:  Oct 23rd, 5-7:30 p.m. Hatcher Gallery 

This event will consist of a screening the film The Harvest/La Cosecha, followed by a panel discussion driven by student questions. Light refreshments will be served. 

Panelists include:

--Andrew Jones, a public health nutritionist who is one of the Sustainable Food System cluster hires from the School of Public Health

--Elaine Ezekiel, Training and Development Specialist from MHP

--A representative from La Salud, which is a student organization focusing on Latino health issues in the community

--Jorge Delva from the School of Social Work

Come see and taste how easy and delicious it is to make healthy foods for you and your family! The Gateway n Play Cafe located in the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital and Von Voigtlander Woman's Hospital will host pumpkin decorating.
